Another original Atlas LC member has hung up his cleats, Tucker Durkin annouced yesterday he is retiring from playing pro lacrosse. The former Johns Hopkins Blue Jay called it quits after 11 seasons as a brusing defender. Durkin was a captain for the five seasons of his playing days in Atlas blue and white. Durkin is the second original Atlas member to retire in free agency after Jack Concannon made his announcement last week.
The Atlas currently have six long poles on their roster: Adler, Smith, Makar, Ammann, Geppert, and Rexrode. Rexrode will be entering his 7th season of pro lacrosse and is the only veteran among this group. Next up is Koby Smith, who's heading into his third year of pro lacrosse after graduating from Towson University. Smith didn't finish the 2023 season after suffering an injury that only allowed him to play three games for the Atlas. Next up are Gavin Adler, Brett Makar, and John Geppert, this trio are all heading into their sophomore seasons as professionals. Makar played all ten regular season games last year, splitting time between LSM and defense and was a productive rookie. Gavin Adler was the number 1 overall pick in last years draft but missed some games due to injury. Last of the rookie trio is Geppert who was added by the Atlas as an undrafted free agent. In his three regular season games the rookie had 7 GBs and 4 CTs. Last of the poles is Ammann who was drafted by the Waterdogs out of High Point, but appeared in no games. The Atlas picked up Ammann from the player pool mid season, but he played in no games with the organization. This group of long poles is good, but lack the size of other defenses in the league. Durkin played the role of communicator on defense, which was seen in many PLL mic'd up clips. The Durkin and Concannon retirements will force the other players on defense to step up and fill new roles.
Tre Leclaire re-signs with the Archers after winning a championship last season. The lethal Canadian shooter out of Ohio State remains part of the elite Archers offense. GM Bates has done a great job keeping his team intact through free agency. Of the Archers possible free agents, defender Matt MacMahon has yet to re-sign with the organization. Could he be the next original PLL member to retire?
